There is a moment, somewhere around 2,500 metres above sea level, usually around 5:30am, when the cloud below you turns pink. Not the sky, the cloud. Because you're above it.

You're standing on the rim of Mount Batur, an active volcano in the Kintamani highlands of Bali, and the sun is rising behind the peaks of Lombok's Mount Rinjani across the Lombok Strait. Below you is a sea of white. Above you is orange and purple and the clearest blue you've seen. That is Mount Batur at sunrise. And there is nothing quite like it in Bali.

What is Mount Batur?

Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active stratovolcano in the Kintamani highlands of Bali, standing 1,717 metres above sea level. It last erupted in 2000, minor volcanic activity is still visible from steam venting at the caldera walls. It sits at the edge of a collapsed ancient caldera, with Lake Batur filling the valley floor below. Views from the summit take in the lake, Mount Agung to the east, and on clear mornings, all the way to Lombok.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it suitable for someone who doesn't hike regularly?

Yes. Level 1 is designed for this, if you can walk uphill for 2–3 hours at a moderate pace with breaks, you can summit. We've guided guests from age 8 to 68.

What if it's cloudy at the summit?

Still extraordinary. The volcanic landscape and being above the cloud layer make this a 5-star experience regardless of weather. Seven years of guiding, and our guests rate it 5 stars in all conditions.

Is it safe?

Yes. Mount Batur's activity is monitored by PVMBG (Indonesia's volcanology authority). Fitrip treks run only at safe activity levels. All guides carry communication equipment.

Can I combine it with a villa stay?

This is what we do best. Stay in a Fitrip Villa in Seseh, we pick you up at 3am, you're back at your pool by 9am. There is nothing better.
